I've always felt that Eddings threw a war into this book just to have the requisite number of pages for a fifth novel. As a child, I found the war intolerable, but as an adult, I'm able to read it through it without too much difficulty.
The conclusion of the Belgariad series is ultimately very satisfying. Everything pretty much happens the way it should, and you're left wishing you knew more about what happened next. Luckily, Eddings does tell us what happens next in the "Mallorean" series.
