Though the book does earn some points for bringing up a subject for people to discuss (and then bringing it up over and over again) in nearly every other respect, it was a terrible read. For starters, her postulation that "Chinese" parenting is superior is severely off the mark. I assume the crux of the book is how it "kind of didn't work" with one of the kids, though the traits exhibited by said kid would have perhaps led to suicide in many other so-pressured children. Yet, the author is unapologetic. Even the controversy is not presented in a cohesive way. It is as frenetic as the author portends to be. It was a poorly told memoir that scraped together some memories which all had the same odd, and frankly, sad message.
