Hold Tight

This was a thriller about a family whose son is withdrawn, sullen, and running away from home and the parents decide to tap into his computer and monitor/read all his emails and computer use. They feel terrible about spying on their son but it becomes apparent that he is in some sort of trouble and is in over his head. Their worries are especially heightened because their son's best friend recently committed suicide. There is also a cold-blooded killer in the neighborhood, an underground goth party scene for kids, and some over-the-top bullying going on at the school. Lots of people are seeking revenge for past wrongs or trying to shelter their children from the consequences of their actions. It was an above average thriller novel because it raised some interesting ethical questions about parenting. But I found that I was mad a the parents who felt guilty about reading the emails and being 'caught' snooping around in their kids' rooms --- heck yeah you'd better snoop around, that's your job as parents! And when one of the group of friends has committed suicide you'd better use every possible angle you can to understand what your kids is going through. I hope my kids know not to expect much privacy when they are teens, we'd better have some talks about that.
