it was amazing
bookshelves: on-real-shelf, bechdel-test
Read in February, 1999

I first read this book as a senior in high school in the best elective I ever took - Women's and Minority Lit, or somesuch silly course name. More like: "These books will blow your mind, children." I remember the other kids in class complaining about how hard it was to understand, and though it was hard for me, too, I was hooked. Every page a poem, every page an insight. And the most beautiful ending scene to any book I've ever read. My school didn't really teach us about slavery, not in any meaningful way. This book began the journey for me to be more enlightened about my country's history, the part my people played in it, and the responsibility to be educated about it that we must carry.
