excellent storytelling: admirable prose, snappy pacing, well-situated fiction with historical context. But the story itself is so far a little heartless -- a satire of manners and social mores, it turns family history into a detached and wry analysis. Unless a book is incredibly clever and witty, I like a little more soul--a little more redemption. I also am slightly disappointed with the discussion of gender identity. The story has some good fodder for discussion, but so far it doesn't seem to shed any happy light on the old gulfs between men and women. We'll see--maybe it will improve.
