The Dark Fields

by Alan Glynn
The Dark Fields, written in 2001 was made into a movie called Limitless this year. Normally, book to movie is a rough transition, where the writer of the book does not receive as much credit or creative freedom. This has always made me lean towards favoring the book. However, I enjoyed the movie more this time. The book is told in the perspective of the main character, Eddie Spinola and a series of coincidences leads him to a drug called MDT-48 that allows the user to access knowledge in the brain that he or she before could not. This makes him more intelligent and leads him to an otherwise impossible future. The book then goes through a predictable maze of ups and downs as the negative side effects are revealed. I enjoyed he powerful idea of the book, but felt that the writing could have been stronger. Even with that said, I would like to see what else Glynn has to offer in the future.
(Fun Fact: The screenwriter of Limitless, Leslie Dixon, is the granddaughter of photographer Dorothea Lang).
