it was ok
bookshelves: india-history

I really wanted to love this book, but in the end, it was just "ok." The story had too many loose ends left incomplete as well as too many social themes...at times, it felt as if the author tried to fit as many social issues into one book as possible which left me wishing there was less social activism and more story.

I did learn a lot about the Raj and the British rule of India, as well as a little bit regarding Partition. Essentially, to me, this book is a "beach read" that tried to be a fiery bookclub barn-burner. I had a difficult time completing this book, even though I liked the characters, I felt I was reading what could have been a great novel that ended up being a mediocre because of lack of follow-through on any of the themes.
