I was not particularly enchanted with The Lady and the Unicorn at first. Nicolas, the lead character, is a careless, womanizing cad. I was afraid the writer had spent all her brightness on Girl with the Pearl Earring! However as we proceeded on, I met other people (each with his or her own chapter and perspective), and I found the tale well spun. I especially enjoyed Chevalier's knowledgeable discussion of the weavers' trade. Of course I had to Google the unicorn tapestries to see the illustrations she describes so well, but the book would have served beautifully without that research.
