I picked up this book for a few reasons. First, I really enjoyed Mary Roach's first book, "Stiff." This book is quite a bit different. "Stiff" dealt with the various things that happen to human cadavers when they are donated to science. This book deals with trying to figure out what happens to the soul after death. I think purely for the reason that "Stiff" was real, rather than speculative, "Stiff" wins as the more entertaining book.

"Spook" is really a science/History book. A good chunk of the book relates to physics and chemistry. Another portion of the book has a lot to do with spiritualism during the turn of the century and various superstitious. Roach is funny. She manages to make somewhat dry material, entertaining.

The second reason for reading this book had to do with timing. I had wanted to read this book since it had been published, but I pushed it up on my list, because my mother passed away in early February. I don't ...more
