Thirty-Three Teeth (Dr. Siri Paiboun, #2)
by Colin Cotterill
by Colin Cotterill
In his second mystery set in post-colonial Laos, Cotterill delivers a story that is a little less focused than his debut effort, but engages the reader through compelling character develop in Dr. Siri Phaiboun and Nurse Dtui. The main action takes place in the north of the country in the historic capital and home of the recently deposed king (who even makes a cameo appearance). As with the first book, there is a political sensitive murder for Phaiboun solve, but far more enjoyable is the ruling communist party attempt to the spirits and their shamans that they will all have to tow the party line or get out. As one might imagine, it doesn't go well, and that storyline alone is worth the price of the book. Back in Vientiane, nurse Dtui is left on her own to solve a series of grisly murders that seem to implicate a ratty, old bear that lives in a park behind big hotel. This story involves its share of (dark) magic, and Dtui will need to fight for her life before it's all over. Really great fun. Can't wait to read the next.
