Considering that I'd never read a historical fiction based in Italy...I loved it. I loved Alessandra's family, her brothers and sisters, especially Nic and the funny illuminator, Grigori.
Her father was gentle and sweet, and her stepmother wasn't all that evil, I mean everyone can't be expected to love their husband's dead wife's children.
Alessandra was a good protagonist, strong and independent, she doesn't need anyone taking care of her. Her love interest, Otto, was a good kid despite the fact that it was a lucky coincidence that they were engaged already.
A good sweet short read. I recommend it to people who like someone short and sweet.
