The sequel to Chains, Forge is an unforgettable tale of the grimmest days for Washington's troops at Valley Forge, told from the perspective of a young African American soldier and former slave, Curzon. As if yearning for his best friend, Isabel, growing as a man, and suffering along with the other soldiers of his company through terrible cold and hunger weren't enough, Curzon runs into his former owner, who proceeds to reclaim his services, not as a free man (as he had promised) but as a slave. The dark days of the winter of '78 come alive in Anderson's telling, as do the tribulations that slavery brought.
