Spring Awakening: A Children's Tragedy
by Frank Wedekind, Jonathan Franzen
by Frank Wedekind, Jonathan Franzen
** spoiler alert **
Is there a way to talk about the play without referencing the 2006 musical? I picked this up as part of my post-"Freedom" Jonathan Franzen kick without knowing much about either (beyond the fact that the musical doesn't seem like my thing). Either Frank Wedekind is ahead of his time, or societal attitudes towards teen sex haven't changed, because all that stuff about lack of sex education, sexual assault, suicide, and unwanted pregnancy is still the same. Or maybe the point is these issues are timeless. In any case, it concerns me that in the musical a pivotal rape scene is changed into a "love" scene. Yes, it's unpleasant, but aren't teenagers?
