There were times when I didn't think I'd finish this one - I'm glad I did, because it was quite enjoyable overall. Sometimes the narrator's tendency to drift off was irritating - reading on the train I tended to fall asleep, but I got a decent run at the end over the long weekend and enjoyed that part more. (I'm never sure how much influence the manner of your reading has on the feelings you develop for a book.)
I enjoyed how John revelled in nature, but I was left puzzled by how awful everyone was to the younger sister Eliza - especially when they were very nice to everyone else.
