"How to Get Out of Your Own Way" by Tyrese Gibson deserves a solid 3 stars. I chose to bypass the chapters on men, women, and intimate relationships because I know that Gibson does not think the way I do and, therefore, I chose not to aggravate myself by reading his thoughts on male-female interpersonal relationships. However, I did read a little bit of the chapter where Gibson advised women to "talk" the fathers of their children into behaving like fathers, which is by far the most inane thing I've ever read. Anyway, when it comes to doling out good advice about life, I found Gibson's book semi-inspirational. I don't believe that Gibson wrote anything I haven't read before and I didn't find his perspective or life story particularly trying or astonishing. I don't think "How to Get Out of Your Own Way" was the best title for this memoir/self-help book...Gibson probably would've done better with a title like, "Life Lessons I Learned from ______" it would have been more accurate. I thought chapters 1, 2, 3, some of 4, and, definitely, 8 were the most enlightening because they featured a lot of information about setting goals, having the motivation necessary to achieve those goals, and how to find and maintain healthy relationships. I found this information most helpful, but like I said previously, not necessarily unique. It took me a long time to finish this book (13 days), but today I was determined to finish it and I found myself forcing myself to complete the book and it just wasn't interesting enough to hold my attention at times. I don't recommend purchasing this book. I paid $11.99 for it and I just don't think it was worth it because it is a retelling of popular information, but reading this book from a young African American male's perspective, might just be what some people need to get motivated to change their lives and do better.

The second chapter has been packed with useful information and a lot to motivate me to do better - and I've only read 3 pages of it!!! People were right, this book is good (so far)."
