The usually shy author is brutally honest with her emotions on the first year of widowhood. She vividly describes her turmoil of grief that includes, rage, fear, insomnia, panic attacks, depression, sleep deprived hallucinations, suicidal hopelessness and the loss of herself as a person. It is hard not to be moved by such a story. I have to confess I skimmed this one (and I love Oate's writing)with the selfish thought of “better her than me.” As if I, like most married women, won’t be walking in her shoes one day.
