I think my disappointment in this book is that I love the subject matter but expected a more literary treatment. I've read Edith Wharton's (posthumously completed) fragment--The Buccaneers-- which presented the same social situations with more panache and more drama.

The story itself was compelling, but the writing was colorless and the plot was resolved like a Harlequin romance.

Ms. Goodwin crafted a colorful set of characters but I felt like I was reading the screenplay for a made-for-TV historical drama. This was a nice summer read, but I wanted it to be so much more than that. The American Heiress was a beautiful, clever girl who rose to the pinnacle of British society, but the book, unlike its heroine, did not achieve its potential.
