Jumping Off Swings is another book about teen pregnancy, but what distinguishes it is that the story is told in alternating points of view -those of the pregnant girl, the baby's father, and their two best friends. While Knowles depicts the emotional complexity of the characters and avoids moralizing or offering easy answers, for me the elegiac tone of the book dragged a bit. Throughout most of the book all the teen characters are stuck in nostalgia for their childhood, which gives the story a sort of backward drag. The characters are well-drawn and their reactions are realistic, but some sort of crucial tension was missing for me. Maybe what's lacking is an honest acknowledgment of sexual desire as a motivation.
