An engaging and thought-provoking read. The writing style put me off at first, but then it became a charming and integral aspect of the narration. The characters are well-developed, interesting, and tragic in an accessible way. I appreciated the insight into the history and culture of the Dominican Republic and the neither here-nor-there aspects of being an immigrant. The narration was brilliant but not condescending.

I very highly recommend it. It's a "light" read that's actually not so light.
