Cover doesn't seem to match the story! Shield Dunleavy (Lee) Mallorough and Source Shintaro (Taro) Karish end up in an entirely foreign land (Southern Islands) where the inhabitants barely acknowledge the Empress, let alone conform to her laws regarding support of the Pairs. Forced to find a way to support themselves, Lee discovers that her love of bench dancing is essential to their survival but she has to forgo her nondescript clothing and self-effacing manner. Taro is virtually a useless parasite and is dismayed to discover that only his manual labor is called for. An interesting glimpse of the gypsy like performers and the different life in the Islands. Not as interesting as the others in the series but Lee learns more about her capabilities.
