I really like Johnson, and I have been awaiting this book for a long time. I loved his book on Priestly, and I love the genre of history-of-science in general.

However ...

While this book has an interesting premise, it is ultimately a very simple thesis. The whole thing could have been summed up by a magazine article, and I think it probably has been. It's not a bad book, and might be of interest to many readers, But ultimately, to me it feels like a short magazine article padded out to full length, and the territory it covers feels like nothing new or original.

Hopefully the experience of writing the book inspires Johnson on to write some greater work. The book is not terrible by any means, and Johnson remains one of my favorite writers.
