Riordan has already proved his mastery of the modern myth/ urban fairytale genre with Percy Jackson and this Egypt update is exactly what it ought to be. Steeped in conflicting legends and piecing together different accounts of the characters with practical mysticism, this book makes ancient gods into sympathetic characters while allowing them to remain archetypes. The quest is interesting enough to make up for the somewhat predictable character developments and even one of those managed to catch me off guard.

Overall, a very well told story, perfect for kids or fantasy readers.
