I'd always intended for my first taste of Baudelaire to be Les Fleurs du mal, but I came across Le Spleen de Paris in a small bookstore and went for it instead. It's a bundle of restful energy, a celebration of the whims and fancies of life. There's a fair bit of melancholy tucked into the words, but it's a melancholy that exemplifies and celebrates, not demeans, the full depth of human existence. Reading it made me feel as if I were floating.
