If you're looking for a novel which completely changes your opinion of the main character as the story progresses, this is the one for you. Overweight, lazy and ugly, Elisa finds herself wedded to King Alejandro, a handsome man who surprisingly does not look at her in disgust. The Girl of Fire and Thorns is about Elisa's journey to become a fierce, strong, fit and brave leader. The character development is executed wonderfully and the exaggerated negative characterisation of Elisa in the beginning only furthers the extreme transformation. On her dedication day as a baby, God's light washed over her and blessed her with a Godstone, a sign that she has been chosen by God to fulfil an important purpose. She must complete her service whether or not she realises she is doing it, even if she disagrees with the path laid out before her and even if she might not survive. Most die before accomplishing anything. It's all she can do to hope for a happy ending.

While the beginning was unique and interesting, it was a little hard to understand, with all of the strange names, locations and history. But soon enough, after the first few chapters, things just began to make sense and here's where the journey starts! Initially, it was very difficult for me to read about such a pathetic protagonist, and Elisa's transformation by the end of the book is absolutely amazing. When she gets kidnapped in the night, she loses weight and learns how to survive on her own. She also manages to lead a group of otherwise hopeless people to safety, with vicious enemies planning to destroy their villages. At times the novel was serious and sad, and at others it was lighthearted, fun and exciting. Elisa's adventures are fascinating and oh so interesting to read about! She's a genius!

One of the people who kidnapped Elisa was Humberto, a boy her age with the skills of someone much older. He sees Elisa for the strong person she is from the very beginning and falls in love with her, despite her marriage to King Alejandro. Carson positions us to favour this relationship, as it is healthy and full of honesty, rather than the passionless and false relationship between the King and Queen. Alejandro has a mistress - can you believe it? He isn't keen to tell others about his secret marriage either...tut tut. I must say, though, his son Rosario is the most adorable thing! You'll definitely fall in love with him.

The conclusion of The Girl of Fire and Thorns is perfect. Everything just falls into place and feels right - peaceful. I cannot wait for the sequel to see what Queen Elisa will do next! Now that she's come into herself and her powers, I'm sure she has many great adventures ahead of her.

Kate (Nomalicious Reads) Yay! I'm so happy you liked it, I was getting scared it wouldn't be good from your comments a minute there!

Lisa Me too! Haha, very relieved ;)

Isabel I've been seized by the sudden urge to say "bleep!" every time something excites me. People are gonna think I'm terribly lame. D:

Anyway - pre-ordered! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Everyone seems to love it. Lucky you got a copy already!! :) I can't wait to read it.

Lisa Not a physical copy yet, unfortunately! Don't think Australian rights have been bought yet so I doubt I'll receive a review copy in print. Might buy it myself some time in the future though ;) Enjoy!

Cindy I am still in the stuck point of this book. I hope it turns around. She drives me a little crazy with her extreme lack of self confidence. I am glad to here it might improve:)

Lisa Yes, she will drive you insane in the beginning! Like I said, it makes her transformation even more "wow" haha. Which part are you up to?

Cindy She is sneaking off to meet with the priest. I think this story could give me serious ranting issues. Lack of confidence to the extreme, plus why wasn't she trained to be a Queen she is a princess, and King Alejandro...I started off kind of liking him because he is kind to Elisa.....but then the mistress oh, I am so mad at him. I hope she approaches him at some point about this. I know it is acceptable of the times but grrr I hate infidelity!!!! I hope it all turns around and comes out good but at the moment, I am having a hard time with it.

Lisa *tries to rack brain* What's she meeting the priest for again? I'm having trouble remembering at which point this scene occurs haha. Beginning? Middle? =|

Stick it out to the end. At first I wanted to smack her and throw the book into a fire LOL. She was SO SO SO aggravating with her self-loathing and overall pathetic demeanour. I wanted to give up but am glad I didn't :) Fingers crossed things turn around soon! ..wherever you're up to ;)

Mistress thing gave me the ****s! Major jerk.

Cindy Father Nicandro, he enlightens her about the meaning of the Godstone. I am on page 96. So still pretty early into it. I will cross my fingers. I like it enough to stick with it. Just some serious aggravation going on:)

Cindy That is the biggest cliff hanger ever lol, Soooooo I am dieing to know did you looove it? What did you think about it? I LOVED LOVED IT!!! I am going to try and reread it before I post my review, still my favorite series ever:D

message 14: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa LOL I didn't think it had a cliffhanger at all! For a moment I was like..."This is such a finished ending...there's meant to be a third book, right?!"

I did enjoy it! It was just good at first but then got really good in the final third? When things got exciting ;) This time I was much more aware of the length. Cayla describes EVERYTHING in such great detail. Honestly, the only time we're not getting commentary is when she's asleep LOL. So that bothered me a little but like I said, the ending made up for it!

message 15: by Cindy (new) - rated it 1 star

Cindy Yes, thank goodness there is a third book! I think it comes out sometime in the early fall. I will be sad to see it end. I hope she has something else in the works, but I didn't notice anything last I checked her blog. Wasn't Steldor amazing! I still think Narian is the best choice for her, but wow I started to really love Steldor in this book *sigh*:) Did you read the sneak peak for the third book? Mine had it on the kindle netgalley version. Sounds really promising, I cant wait! Hows that for rambling and gushing:D

message 16: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I wouldn't have minded if it had finished there (like I said, ending was pretty good to me!) but I'm glad we do get some more time with the characters <3

Steldor is so sweet. One word: KITTEN!

And yes I did read the sneak peek! I didn't expect it LOL. If it were me, I'd just take the "deal" and live happily ever after :P But of course, these guys need to fight and make problems LOL.

message 17: by Cindy (new) - rated it 1 star

Cindy You are write it could have ended easily with book two, she did a great job tying everything up. I look forward though to watching her relationship grow with you know who. I want more so I am so glad there is a third book:)
Kitten with a lot of prrrr!lol
Glad you caught the sneak peak, talked to a few GR friends who missed it.

message 18: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa Yes, I'm excited to see how things develop now that the "obstacle" is dealt with *wink*

How did they miss the sneak peek? Did they get ARCs from somewhere other than NG?

message 19: by Cindy (new) - rated it 1 star

Cindy Yes they did, just got over looked some how:)

message 20: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa Oh okay, I see.

message 21: by Cindy (new) - rated it 1 star

Cindy If I remember right wasn't there a page or two of unrelated stuff and then the sneak peak? I am always hoping an author will leave author notes or something so I always go to the end. I see how it could get over looked though:D
Any marvelous plans for the weekend?

message 22: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa Hmm, not too sure. I always check out acknowledgements ;) Don't think anything special's happening tomorrow! Will probably relax before getting back to things during the week. You?

message 23: by Cindy (new) - rated it 1 star
