Longer review, in case this one gets deleted, here.

Clare's fanfic titles:

Yes, that last one says the Mortal Instruments. And yes, it was about Ron and Ginny.

Before you leave me comments about your love for Clare and how I need to understand this poor flawed favourite author of yours, do me a favour and check the other comments. Chances are that many others have asked or told me the same thing, and I have already responded to it.

Jen Wait, didn't Cassandra Claire write Draco Veritas? Is it really plagiarism if it was her own work to begin with?

I managed to track down Draco Veritas somewhere as an ebook, but the formatting was shitty shit shit so I gave up trying to read it ages ago.

I would say yes, but I'm sure there are other people who would disagree. Also, Draco Veritas was filled with plagiarized stuff from other famous works. What really bugs me is that after she got kicked off for plagiarism, she decided to take the characters from her fan fiction - characters of JKRowling, mind you - and changed their names to fit them into The Mortal Instruments. She knew it would sell because of how popular her fan fiction was. I mean, if you're going to write a book, try to put some effort into making it original at least.

I'm not going to bother reading her fan fiction. It probably has characters I've already read about.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard I read Draco Veritas WAAAAAAAY back in the day. Not all of it because it got pulled down because of the plagiarism and I became aware.

I have never read any of her books since because once someone behaves unethically I don't trust them to change. I really don't understand how the whole mess has been pushed under the rug.

I'm glad you posted this. I just have to say WOW to the similarities.

Oh, thank you! I was still very confused when I first finished this book because everyone around me claimed it was the best thing ever -- and I thought it sucked. I kept thinking that I might've missed something... so I wasn't sure how to review.

Hmmm... maybe I should re-read it too...

I guess after the number of fans she got through all that fan fiction, she didn't really care what she wrote -- she knew people would buy the same shit. Pisses me off. How does she go around calling herself a writer? I also heard that in order to write faster, she lets her friends RP the plot of her book, and just uses that. I don't have any evidence, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

So I thought I should add something here.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard I don't understand how people could have been around the internet (and ESPECIALLY the Harry Potter fandom) without encountering Clare's story. It was drama-rama when it happened. It just disappoints me in publishing. (Of course they also published Tyra Banks novel so I don't know why I think they should have standards)

I've always stayed away from fan fiction, even though I love Harry Potter. I understand that I didn't know - but I guess she's been deleting and keeping it all under control. Arhcer, a friend on GR, added most of this stuff to Clare's wiki page, but it got deleted.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard I enjoyed fanfiction. Wrote a bit because it was fun to explore the world myself -- like a writing prompt.

But it seems like a big conspiracy almost where everybody in the YA worlds is friends & nobody ever mentions the sketchiness that went down. And the more you research it the sketchier it looks.

message 10: by Leah (new)

Leah The reason I never bothered with these books is solely due to her HP drama. I had a friend who was obsessed with her fanfics & even printed them out (ha! Clare can't get rid of everything). I keep hearing that these books are OMGSOGOOD!!! but after witnessing all the drama go down back then, it left a bad taste in my mouth & I can't bring myself to read them.

Princess Kayla I love the pics! I had heard she used fan fic work in her books but never saw it side by side. That's ridiculous.

PC THANK YOU. JUST THANK YOU FOR POINTING OUT ALL THAT IS WRONG IN THE WORLD. I am crying tears of joy. You dont even understand, when I found out people actually LIKED the book, despite all the ideas stolen from harry potter, I was like: "I dont want to live on this planet anymore". But you, my friend, have restored my faith in humanity. Thank you.

Georgina Howlett I just want to say that EVERYONE takes ideas from whatever they come across and mushes it together into something good. It's the way writing works, you get inspiration from everywhere. And if you steal tiny things and make them work in your own way, it's not discouraged. C:

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard What she did in her fanfiction was very different. She took whole passages from a novel and plagiarized them as her own. We are all inspired by things we read and see. But that's not what she did. There's a reason she got banned on all the major fanfiction websites.

Read up on it: http://www.journalfen.net/community/b...

But that's the problem. Clare doesn't do it like that. She used to actually copy down entire scenes from other books in her notebook, and then insert them into her fan fiction, sometimes even forgetting that she didn't write them!

It's okay if you take ideas and work them into your story, or renew them in some different way. What Clare does though, is take everyone else's work, move it around, change names, then call it her own. That's why to me, when I read her books, it felt like entire passages and quotes were lifted from other books and inserted into her story. You can tell that it doesn't flow nicely, and certain parts feel out of place.
