The plague comes to town. Tons of people die.

You definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to read this book. I am not much of a historical fiction fan, but I was definitely pulled into the story. The details were really interesting -- in fact, my favorite part of the book came at the end, when the author explained how the novel arose (and then diverged from) real evidence.

The ending to the story is truly bizarre, however. It's almost as if an editor told the author that she had to insert some drama into the story to get readers to buy the book. The result is a somewhat abrupt and hard-to-believe conclusion.
