** spoiler alert ** This book tells the sweet and sentimental story of young first love in the American south of the 1950's. Landon Carter is a normal teenage boy, and Jamie Sullivan is the saintlike daughter of the local Baptist minister. They don't seem to have much in common, but the circumstances of one year throw them together and Landon begins to see Jamie in a different light, which will change his life forever. The story is gentle and poignant, and I enjoyed reading it. However, and I almost never feel this way, I truly believe that the movie was better executed. This may be my personal preference, mostly because the movie softens some of the religious overtones of the book, but I would still say that the book is an enjoyable read. It's also a good romantic story for teens, and was the recipient of the Colorado Blue Spruce Award, which is a literary award for adult literature that's particularly appealing to teens.
