Not since The Book Thief have I read such a powerful piece of teen historical fiction (or any historical fiction, really). Ruta Sepetys, through family stories and research, brings to light an event that is not only underrepresented in literature, but in history as well. This is a story of a family torn from their home in Lithuania and exiled, along with thousands of others, to the most northern part of Siberia. It is powerful, emotional, and will be very difficult to forget.
