A simple story about the friendship of a little White girl and a little Black girl in the segregated south, Woodson’s book is a powerful tale of seeing beyond our differences. I also love the symbolic fence that sits between the two girls’ homes as a symbol for the divide separating the races—“Someday somebody’s going to come along and knock this old fence down.” E.B. Lewis’ detailed water color illustrations add to the beauty of the story.
