it was amazing
Read in January, 2008

This book far exceeded my expectations. It was grim and beautiful. It's a historical novel that brings you to the time and place with such an easy touch...no awkward passages setting the stage, just outstanding storytelling. The characters are well developed and authentic in their complexity. Also, it rang true with my experience of life, meaning that not everything ended satisfyingly for the characters. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Christy I love that you describe this book as "grim and beautiful." What a perfect way to illustrate exactly how I felt also. I think in many ways, it is beautiful BECAUSE it is so grim. And that is something that is rarely written about but often experienced.

Nick Smith I also thought that this was a great book... maybe not as enthusiastically as you but I still enjoyed it. The vivid description of the setting really makes you feel like you are part of the story.
