** spoiler alert **
At times I wasn't sure if this was a forerunner to bodice-rippers. But there's too much morality, not tacked on, but mixed in, and too much loving detail in the medieval Norwegian setting. Hard to read at times as young Kristin balances between being impossibly headstrong and overtaken by events beyond her control. It's long and the length forced me to live in her world for a while instead of tearing through the book. Looking forward to the next two.
