The first book of the series is about Lena's 16th moon (birthday) when she was supposed to be claimed either by the Light or Dark. This book is mostly about her 17th moon, and whether or not she she would become Light or Dark forever. This book starts out with Macon's funeral, after which Lena pulls away from Ethan. She believes Macon's death is her fault, and that she's destined to become Dark, in which case she can only hurt Ethan.
There are several new characters introduced in this book. There's a new intern at the Library the intelligent, young and very pretty Liv, who Ethan will be spending a fair amount of time with because of his summer job at the Library. There is also a new mysterious Incubus in John. Ridley is back and plays an important part in the story, along with almost all of the other characters from book one.
There is a lot of time spent down in the mysterious tunnels under Gaitlin, and they apparently keep going under much of the South.
When Lena takes off with John and Ridley in the tunnels for destinations unknown, it's up to Ethan, Link and Liv to go try and rescue her, along with a lot of help from their friends and relatives at various times along the way.
