I love it when a book surprises me. I don't mean surprise endings or plot twists. I mean when you start reading a book and you think it's an ok read and then it gets better and better until you can't put it down. At first I thought the main character of the book, Paul, was too annoyingly depressed and listless, and his love interest, Tamsen, too perfect. I still think Tamsen was too perfectly written. And Paul is depressed. But he starts to grow on you. And you get used to his absurd ability to talk to his dog, Stella. Stella really is the smartest character in the book. It's Paul's relationship with Stella that compels you to keep reading. The cliamx and ending are all a bit too contrived and the writing a bit simplistic, but its heartfelt tone nevertheless tugged at my emotions. Once you get through the somewhat slow first quarter of the book, it's easy to become emotionally invested in this charming book. It's a fun and heart-warming read.
