I've been sampling some detective origin stories lately, and this is one of the better ones, with a "Chinatown"-like final twist that, like "Chinatown," has implications on several levels: plot, character, social themes.

I'd recommend it to readers who like compact, dense, complex, character-rich noir and don't mind the pileups of coincidences, conveniences and bodies that come along with the genre. But I'm still giving it three stars instead of four, because I'm holding to my own star system standards: 1 star is poor, 2 stars fair, 3 stars good, 4 stars excellent and 5 stars genius. This is a good book and that's about that.
