** spoiler alert **
I got this out from the library because of several discussions my 7 year old daughter and I had about whether or not we were "rich or poor." I kept trying to explain how in our country, we're average but in other countries, the things we have would make us seem very rich. We looked through the pages together, read about peoples lives, had discussions about population growth, the effects of war, how many "THINGS" we have (we as a family and Americans in general) and how grateful we are for our flushing toilets :)
I love the concept for this book. It is one thing to learn about a country's leaders and celebrities, or to visit its tourist towns - but completely another to step into the shoes of an average person, like myself. This book made the world seem small and intimate in one sense, but, at the same time, showed how very different lives are in on this planet, how varied our history is and how many things we do have in common.
