Read in January, 1984

** spoiler alert ** I read this book in the 5th grade and I remember being very embarrassed to check it out (it was very different from the horse books I usually read). I went home and read it in the confines of my room and hid it from my mom (like she would have cared... n'er a banned book was ever mentioned in our household). What I found inside was so profound at the time... Judy Blume is an author who understands her audience. I think I read it at the exact right age and it was the first book that spoke to me, voicing my earliest adolescent feelings. I was that late-bloomer whose pre-pubescent body was falling quickly behind the status quo... and I was that girl who secretly spoke with a God I didn't know or understand every single night; desperately hoping he was listening and finding the subject way to personal to discuss with anyone. It wasn't until many searching years later I was able to find the right answer to that one. I don't think I would want to re-read this one now as I think it would diminish the impact it had on me then.

Lydia LaPutka You'd be surprised! I just re-read it as a 48-year-old and was pleasantly surprised!
