So Haph gets dumped off at a wizard's academy with only a few other young boys. It's like Hogwarts, except the boys are given no food, soap, clothing beyond a scratchy monk robe, or directions. See, learning how to magically create their own food, clothing, and sense of personal grooming shows that they are worthy of becoming adult wizards, and it's all the more of an accomplishment if they can do it all on their own (and here, that means literally since no one's seen reality TV and can't figure out the concept of alliances). Naturally, they start getting sick and dying one by one. It's somewhat frustrating to read, so you might want to do the yogic breathing exercises with the boys when those passages come up.
In the alternating story, we learn of Sadima, a young woman who is basically trapped by domestic violence. And no yogic breathing. And that's the story line you should be scared of.
