When Maya's paternal grandmother dies, she finally gets a chance to meet her mum's family and to experience her mum's fascination with horses. Thereby she not only finds out more about her background but truly discovers herself. I absolutely loved reading this book - it is right up there with Esperanza Rising and Becoming Naomi Leon - and was not disappointed even though I had high expectations. While I am afraid of horses and consequently usually not that interested in the topic, I loved accompanying Maya on her journey into the wilderness of Wyoming and almost envied her for the special bond that developed between her and a wild horse.
