hmmmm... stories with Nick make me tense, as poor Nick as 'turned to the dark side' ala Anykin Skywalker... these early stories of Nick are charming, but this second one introduces Ambrose - Nick in the far future, Nick without emotions, Nick who will destroy the world, Nick trying to hold onto his humanity and change the past... can he? hmmmm if he does, how does this effect the other line of stories of the dark hunters? a bit confusing...

14 year old Nick - has gained Caleb (popular football player/demon/ protector) as a friend of sorts and protector... and has gained Cody (angel of death - to judge young Nick - to help him keep his mother's goodness or kill him if he gives into his father's evilness) who is attracted to the young, developing, idealistic, sarcastic, teen.

The underlying story is the new football coach, who took the heart of a 14 year old girl 100 years ago to ensure winning the championship... and then the death of the whole team as a sacrifice to the demon he sold his soul to... and a feat he repeats every year - and it's Nick's teams' turn...

Cody & Caleb attempt to help train, teach, and protect Nick... and Ambrose comes to him... and though Ambrose wants to change the past (Cody is new to his past), he doesn't come through with the easy wisdom for Nick when he asks for it... ambrose sends Death, Pain and Suffering to train him also... and Nick is starting to get an inclining of his powers... what does Ambrose really want? hmmmm

And Nick knows (from his father & life lessons), that the one you trust is going to be the one to betray and destroy you... and the story ends with ???? (Ambrose & ? ) saying the betrayer is now trusted, and soon Nick will see his end... they want us to think that Cody is his betrayer - and in a sense she is, as she is willing to kill him if necessary... hmmmm Also, Nick starts to gain power - to see the supernatural, to see the future & the past... and evil Caleb warns him that he will destroy all he loves & ultimately the world - what a weight for the young boy to bear.

Against the backdrop of the future/past/right/wrong, Nick, Caleb, Cody with the help of Xenon defeat the coach, sending him into the hell he left the 1st girl he killed 100 years earlier.
