it was amazing
bookshelves: ancient-history, roman-history

I really enjoyed this book. I've never known much about Pompeii, but Mary Beard really manages to bring the town to life in this book. One of the things that often irritates me about many history books is how remote the people seem, how strange and alien, and Beard succeeds in making the ancient Pompeiians come alive, living their lives just as anyone today would do. I also liked how she's very open and honest about how little can be known about a civilisation just from the traces you can find - she never fails to comment on how everything is just speculation and guesswork. I've never visited Pompeii, but after reading this I really want to now.
