While it is true that a well-constructed plot and interesting story line are two of the most important building blocks of a novel, I find that well-rounded, believable characters are what keep me coming back for more. I believe this explains the lure of Danielle Steel novels to such a widespread audience, and 44 Charles Street is no exception. With only a couple of truly "hate-able" characters, the rest range from truly loveable to ... well, really loveable. As with most of Ms. Steel's books, the situations are something the vast majority of us will never experience and the resolution just a bit too pat, with all those really loveable characters living happily ever after, but still, it is just this that draws us to her books. Escapism? Sure. But this book, as have most of Ms. Steel's, kept me interested, brought a smile to my face sometimes and a tear to my eyes once or twice, so who could ask for more? I don't think Danielle Steel will ever be listed as an author of classical literature, nor win a Nobel prize, but for a fun read, I highly recommend this book.
