After her brother is reported dead, Brigitte is under the thumb of her tyrannical aunt, who forces her into Rowland's arms, while telling him she is only a slave.

Rowland's arrogance can get in the way of enjoying the story. There are a lot of little subplots that don't tie in very well. Also, the ending is strange and is a little too convenient.
