Great example of Swedish crime novels! As a first foray into the mystery world, this was a great novel. Honestly, couldn't put this book down. It was quite dark and the murder itself was very troubling - gruesome and senseless. But, Mankell really understood suspense and creating a plot that made the reader want to know more. Our hero, Inspector Kurt Wallander (strangely enough, he is always referred to by his full name) is sort of a sad character but a smart one -- realistic. I definitely recommend this book to mystery readers and those new to the genre.
