Brick Lane

by Monica Ali
Novel named after a street of the same name, at the center of the Bangladeshi community in London. Author is ½ English and ½ Bangladeshi and moved to this community when she was 3. Book follows the life of a Bangladeshi immigrant named Nanzeen who moved to council flats (public housing) called Tower Hamlets at age 18 after her father marries her off to a man 20 years her senior named Chanu. She adjusts to life in Britain and tries to be a good Muslim wife and mother and accept Fate as it comes. I liked the first half of the book but something happens in the 2nd half which I did not care for. There is much more interesting info about this book, the author, and the reaction it caused in Britain and its Bangladeshi community here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Ali I did not know it had been so popular and supposedly it was made into a movie in ’07; I had never heard of it. Anyone else?
