We live in a world in which we constantly obsess over trying to label everything we come in contact with in order to describe it to others. How many times have you asked someone what a book, movie or television show is like only to get a response from them similar to: If you liked thing A then you’ll love thing B which is just like thing C plus thing A divided by thing Q! Moondogs however is a hard novel to pin down and put in a box for the purposes of comparison. If I we’re forced to place it somewhere in order to describe it then I’d begrudging choose to put it in the magical realism box, but the truth of the matter is that while it’s heavy on the magical realism it’s also heavy on both the magical and the realism separately.
