The perspective shown in the novel, of a woman living in India right after Partition and through the next 20 years, was really informative. The religious tension that existed and still exists (as far as I know) was shown through the various characters in the book as well. That being said, it was very long and I often found myself a bit disappointed by the lack of gumption in the main character. Perhaps she was meant to show that, but I felt like she never really came around to reflect, embrace what she could, and make her life better.
