A re-read after many years. One of Hambly's best, which is saying a lot. An historical vampire novel set in the early years of the twentieth century, when someone is killing the vampires of London. James Asher, a lecturer at Oxford specializing in folklore, also a spy retired from the Great Game, is hired to investigate. Sharply drawn characters and fine attention to detail are the marks of all of Hambly's novels. This one also offers a tight plot with unexpected twists, a little moral ambiguity, and some good gothic horror. Recommended.
