Assholes Finish First by Tucker Max (pp. 404)
Tucker Max is man-child, frat boy who has lived an interesting, no apologies take on life. He’s the guy at the bar who is never short on a hilarious story and can’t be believed. But they’re true and there’s closets full of material. This book is a series of his drink-fueled hijinks and rampant stupidity that is well-written and hilarious. Every so often there are some pretty deep insight into human interaction and lack of self-esteem of women.
While some passages about pursuing a sexual conquest list that includes midgets, three-ways, and capital-C crazy women and tales of drunken escapades that result in brushes with the law are often head shaking and offensive, they are undeniably entertaining. The people watching is fabulous. The ability to judge from afar is fantastic. He captures the college and early 20s experience that many romantize and few had incredibly well.
What redeems a lot of the material is Max’s clear intelligence. He’s honest about who he is and has a very detached view of sex. After his best seller ‘I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell’ many of the stories here involve the affect fame can have on relationships even if those relationships deal with pure conquest-oriented hook-ups. And as popular blogger before blogging became what it is today, some of his well-documented history will prove to be a treasure trove to psychology majors and sociologist looking into the nature of how modern kids hook up. Some of ugliest passages, which also prove to be the most interesting are written by past Tucker conquests who wanted to be had by the man just because he had the reputation of being him.
Dads of daughters thinking that my little girl could never grow up to be one of THOSE girls could take a lesson from the book. People who love FML and Texts from Last Night will love the book.
