It's 1935 and the nation is in the throes of the Great Depression. Jobs are few so when Turtle's mother is hired as a housekeeper for a woman who dislikes children, she sends Turtle to Key West to stay with her sister. The trouble is Aunt Minerva doesn't know Turtle is coming and she arrives at a home already overflowing with three boys and a family with problems of its own. Fortunately Turtle is an eleven-year-old with a thick skin. She's extremely aware of her mother's lack of good sense, but more than makes up for it with her own hard work, wit, and street smarts. This is the story of a little girl who must use those skills to survive. Holm adds an author's note to cite those parts of the story that are from her own family's past.
