This book has many positive qualities. It was a total page turner. From start to finish I was glued to it. The story lends itself beautifully to a sequel and I am excited to see where the author takes it. I love the world Kittredge created and really thought she did a good job of allowing that particular story arc to develop beautifully - feeding the reader just enough bite sized information to keep you intrigued.

Onto the negative -- the last 80 pages of this book seem as though they were written by an author who knew she had to hurry up and finish. Without giving anything away, reveals and plot advancement seem forced, uncoordinated and confusing. Apart from the ending, I despised the Cal character - the constant whining was fatiguing and I kept hoping he would die. I am not sure that's what Kittredge intended the reader to feel, because it made me want to throw an anvil at him and be done with the boy. Whatever her intention for that character, I don't think he was well developed and that's a shame the entire 500 pages through.

Also, I hate the herione's name(Aoife) -- still don't know how to pronounce that. I found myself getting distracted by her name when I should have been focused on the story.

Despite the negatives I've mentioned, this is still an excellent read.
